BENNINGTON -- Assunta “Sonny” Caslin, 89, a resident of Morgan Street in Bennington died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2008, at the Crescent Manor Care Center surrounded by her family following a long illness.

She was born in Shaftsbury on Dec. 3, 1918. She was the daughter of the late John and Angelina (Schaldone) Ottaviano. She received her education in Bennington where she attended Saint Francis de Sales Academy and Saint Joseph’s Business College.

Sonny married Gordon R. Caslin July 1, 1939, at Saint Francis de Sales Church. Mr. Caslin died Dec. 10, 1983.

In earlier years, Sonny had been employed at various mills including the Union Carbide Corporation, EZ Mill and Flint and Robbins. In 1983, she retired from the Bijur Lubricating Company.

She enjoyed bowling and bingo. She loved Dean Martin and was a big Yankee fan.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law Michael and Ann Caslin of Shaftsbury, two granddaughters, Colleen Caslin of Brewster, Mass. and Kelley Flynn and her husband Lorcan of Brookline, Mass. She is also survived by a grandson, Michael Caslin, and his wife Bobbie of Bennington, a great granddaughter, Annie Jean Caslin of Bennington, a brother John Ottaviano of Bennington and sister Lucinda ‘Puss’ Barthelmas of Albany, N.Y. Several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was pre-deceased by three sisters, Casprina Young, Mary Geneva Young, Marie Beaulieu and a brother Guy Ottaviano.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008, with a prayer at 10:30 a.m. and then from Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church at 11:00 a.m. where the Mass of Resurrection will be offered.

The burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Tuesday Jan. 8, 2008, from 4 to 7 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.
