Atlantis Poor 1919-2008 BENNINGTON Atlantis "Lannie" Poor 88 a resident of Emma Street died Thursday morning March 6,2008 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center following a brief illness. Lannie was born in Island Pond on May 11, 1919, daughter of the late Wendell and Maude Still Thurber. She grew up in Island Pond where she attended local schools, she continued her education at Lyndon State Teachers College, graduating with her teaching degree. Lannie had taught school in several V.t. towns for many years, the last school being in Williamstown. She was married to Sherwood Poor on Aug. 29, 1941, for many years they had resided in Braintree where they ran Poor's IGA General Store, she also served as the town Postmistress from the store as the Post Office was located in the store. Following Mr. Poor's passing on April 5, 1969 she relocated to Bennington from Roxbury where she worked at the former Grant's and Woolworth Department stores, she had also worked at the former Heritage House Restaurant as a cook. Lannie thoroughly enjoyed bowling and was a member of the Senior league, she also enjoyed crossword puzzles and could always be seen walking throughout the Bennington community. Lannie leaves her daughters Jean Monfette of Enfield, Conn. and Janet Ouellette of Burlington, Conn., a brother Benjamin Thurber of Crafstbury, sister Judy Thurber of Colorado Springs, Colo., grandsons Daniel Monfette of Ellington, Conn. and Roger Monfette of Enfield, Conn., great grandchildren Timothy and Sarah Monfette, nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her husband she was predeceased by two sons David and Brian Poor. FUNERAL NOTICE: At the request of Lannie, there will be no services or calling hours. Her family will honor her life privately.
