SHAFTSBURY -- Mrs. Audrey C. Maitland, 73, widow of William G. Maitland Sr., a resident of Venice, Fla. and a former resident of Old Depot Road, Shaftsbury, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center, following an 18-month battle with leukemia.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. April 3, 1931, she received her early education in the New York City schools, graduated from high school in Hempstead, N.Y. and became employed by the Long Island Lighting Company.

Mr. and Mrs. Maitland were married Sept. 15, 1951 in Hempstead. They settled in Columbus, Ga. while her husband was stationed at Fort Benning. They returned to East Meadow, Long Island, where they raised their three children and Audrey worked as an executive secretary and then as assistant vice president of the mortgage department of Hempstead Bank. She was a also a member of Neptune Chapter 847, Order of Eastern Star in Bellmore, N.Y.

In 1975, they purchased their home in Shaftsbury. While living in Shaftsbury, Audrey was employed at the Merchants Bank, First Vermont Bank and by the town of Bennington Community Development Department. Her last job was as editor of Working People Magazine, a bi-monthly publication. With her husband, she had been active in the NorShaft Lions Club for many years.

In 1989 they began wintering in Venice, Fla. and later moved there year-round. Mr. Maitland died June 13, 2003.

An avid gardener and swimmer, Audrey loved cooking and entertaining, reading and taking walks.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Paul and Kelly Maitland of Shaftsbury and William Jr. and Karen Maitland of Sayville, Long Island, N.Y.; a daughter and son-in-law, Diane L. and William Kitchell of Bellmore, Long Island, N.Y.; and four grandchildren, William and Christopher Kitchell of Bellmore and Karoline and Adam Maitland of Shaftsbury.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Tuesday, Feb. 8, at 4 p.m., with the Rev. Penny Hawkins, deacon of St. Peter’s Episcoipal Church, officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 4 to 6 p.m., when the family will be in attendance.

Private committal services will be held at the family lot at Center Shaftsbury Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mrs. Audrey Maitland’s memory may be made to the Green Mountain Chapter of the American Red Cross through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
