Audrey Rakow Friedman

1927 - 2015 Audrey Rakow Friedman, 88, died November 30, 2015 in Naples, FL after several years of declining health. Born March 7, 1927 in Brooklyn, NY, the youngest of four children born to Jacob and Sarah Rakow, she graduated from City College of New York at the age of 19 and subsequently received a Masters degree in English from the University of Pennsylvania and a Masters degree in Psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Passionate about education, particularly about literature, she taught high school English as well as literature courses in the Brandeis University Extension Program. As a college dean, she developed a program enabling women who had not continued higher education to return in later years to college. As a psychologist she worked with autistic children and assisted her husband, Morton Friedman, M.D., in his psychiatric practice. She lived her life in accordance with one of her favorite sayings, "If it's worth doing, it's worth doing well." Married at 19 to Morton, whom she met on summer vacation when they were 14, she enjoyed a wonderful, loving marriage until Morton's death 53 years later in 2000. They lived most of their married life in Millburn/Short Hills, NJ, retiring to Naples, Florida in 1996. They shared many adventures as they traveled the world together, enjoying the exploration of different cultures, theater and music in the process, and routinely included several dear friends as they did so. Central to Audrey's life was the love and pride she had in those who survive her. Despite her years of declining health, she made it clear that thinking about and being visited by her family sustained her in gladness. She is survived by her daughter, Lisa Catapano Friedman, M.D., her grand-daughters and their husbands, Sarah Catapano-Friedman and Kenneth Ojukwu and Rebecca and Jeffrey Amster, and her adored great-grandaughters, Olivia Ojukwu and Elena Amster. SERVICES: A graveside service of remembrance was held on December 2, 2015 in Naples, Florida.
