Austin Marion Burton1918-2008 BENNINGTON : Austin Marion Burton, age 89, a resident at the Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center in Bennington, died on Saturday evening, Feb. 16, following a brief illness. He was born in Wenatchee, Wash. on March 17, 1918 and was the son of the late John Franklin Burton and Vera Maguire Burton. He received his education in Wenatchee schools and is a graduate of the University of Washington, with a degree in Political Science. Additionally, he studied law at Gonzaga University. Mr. Burton showed an early talent for music, and played piano and organ lifelong. During World War II, Mr. Burton became a commissioned officer in the Naval Reserve, at the rank of Lieutenant j.g., serving as Officer in Charge of Gate Vessels at the entrance of New York Harbor. He married the former Grace Esther Cross in New York City on May 12, 1945. Mrs. Burton predeceased him in 1981. For fifty years, Mr. Burton was self employed in advertising in both N.Y, and Louisville, Ky. His last business was Gourmet Dining Club in Louisville. Mr. Burton maintained an avid interest in politics, aspired to political office, and won the N.H. Vice Presidential primary in 1968. In his later years, Mr. Burton enjoyed offering his musical talents as pianist by volunteering at hospitals, nursing homes, and adult day health centers. He leaves one daughter, Ms. Susan Burton of Bennington, Vt., one sister, Mrs. Eunice Burton Chase of Spokane, Wash, one brother, Mr. Martin Burton of Seattle, Wash., and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he is predeceased by one daughter, Dr. Mary Veronica Burton who died i 2000. FUNERAL SERVICES : Services will be held at the Telford's Chapel of the Valley in East Wenatchee, Wash. on Feb. 20, Interment will follow in the family lot in Wenatchee Cemetery. Transfer to Telford's Chapel of the Valley will be made by the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME in Bennington, Vermont.
