Barbara was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1939, to Ida Mae and William Henry Houghton. Barbara graduated from West Catholic High School for Girls in 1957. She graduated from Bennington College with a B.A. in painting and ceramics in 1985.

Barbara raised her family in Bennington, Vermont, where she lived for 44 years. Since 2014, Barbara lived with her husband and daughter, Donna, in Aldan, PA.

More recently, Barbara made jewelry using colored polymer clay and often employed the same technique of layering many colors that she used in her abstract paintings.

Barbara loved to read mystery novels, watch English mystery television series and movies, play word games and keep up with the world on Facebook.
