Barbara W. Bishop 1920-2012 BENNINGTON Mrs. Barbara W. Bishop, 92, widow of Fred Bishop Sr., a resident of Town Line Road, Bennington, died peacefully Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at her residence. Born in Pownal February 28, 1920 she was the daughter of the late Harry Beals Sr. and Laura (Pratt) Beals. She received her early education at the Oak Hill Elementary School in Pownal, was a 1938 graduate of Williamstown High School and in 1942 graduated from North Adams State Teachers College. Barbara's first teaching job was in Hawley (MA) Elementary School. After one year she came to Bennington where she spent many years teaching and substituting in area schools. Barbara and Fred were married at the First United Methodist Church parsonage in Pownal on August 7, 1943. In 1946 Barbara and Fred moved to Brattleboro where Fred had been hired to manage a large sheep farm. They returned to Pownal in the late 1940's when they purchased the family farm from Fred's parents on the site of what later became Green Mountain Race Track. In 1962 they purchased the 162 acre Reed farm on Myers Road where they established High Winds Farm . They moved in on Mother's Day and Barbara was doing quite a lot of substitute teaching when Fred said, "Come home Barbara, you must ride the tractor", which she did for many years until they retired in 1992. Fred died September 30, 2007. Over the years Barbara was very active in the Bennington County Farm Bureau and the Bennington County 4-H program. She performed many jobs on the farm and also did canning and gardening, chair caning, oil painting, rug braiding, raised collies and was famous for her many cookie recipes. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Gail and James Howe Jr. of Shaftsbury; three sons and daughters-in-law, James and Linda Bishop of Shaftsbury, Fred Bishop Jr. and Sandy of Milford, New Hampshire and Keith and Linda Bishop of Shaftsbury; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Adam and Ashley Howe of Shaftsbury, Barry and Amy Bishop of North Bennington, Scott and Aimee Bishop of Troy, N.Y., Aaron and Allison Bishop of Falmouth, Maine, Amy and Steven Deschene of Derry, N.H., Justin, Jada and Joshua Bishop, all of Shaftsbury; thirteen great-grandchildren, Brooke and Meghan Bishop of North Bennington, Torin and Trevor Bishop of Troy, N.Y., Henry, Brynn, Audrey and Cassidy Bishop of Falmouth, Maine, Lakin and Cooper Deschene of Derry, N.H., Amarah and Bentlei Adams of Shaftsbury and Sawyer Tatro of Bennington; a brother, Harry Beals Jr. of Pownal; a sister, Hazel Beals of Castleton; a sister-in-law, Jeannette Bishop of Pownal and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Barbara was predeceased by a sister, Harriet Beals and a brother, Allen Beals. FUNERAL NOTICE: Memorial services celebrating the life of Barbara W. Bishop will be held from the First United Methodist Church of Pownal on Monday, March 5, 2012 at 1 p.m. with Rev. Gary Dickson, pastor, officiating. Burial will take place in the family lot in Oak Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions in Barbara W. Bishop's memory may be made to either VNA & Hospice of Southwestern Vermont Health Care or the First United Methodist Church of Pownal through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
