Barbara J. Connelly

1935-2010 BENNINGTON Barbara Jean Peterson Connelly, 74, a resident of Willow Road in Bennington, died peacefully Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010, surrounded by her family.

Born at Putnam Memorial Hospital in Bennington on Oct. 16, 1935, daughter of the late Francis and Bernice Lohnes Connelly, Barbara received her education in Bennington and was a graduate of Bennington Catholic High School where she played on the basketball team.

She was married to Orville James Peterson. Mr. Peterson died on July 5, 1972.

Barbara's love for skiing started at Prospect Mountain. She became a certified ski instructor and taught skiing at Brodie Mountain for 14 years and was a member of PISA (Professional Ski Instructor Association). She loved to hike the Long Trail and Appalachian Trail. Her goal was to hike all the highest peaks in the state of Vermont, a goal in which she succeeded. With her love of the outdoors she managed the Half Moon State Park for five years with a long-time friend, Leonard Quinn. She was also a rural mail carrier and had worked for JA McDonald.

Barbara enjoyed many activities including, camping, swimming, her garden and flowers. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Barbara was extremely proud of her Irish heritage. She made many sacrifices while raising her six children.

She leaves her children, Jeanne Peterson of Scotland, Kathleen Nichols and her husband, John, of Saint Augustine, Fla., James Francis Peterson and his son, Tyler James, of Bennington, June Amelia Azzaro of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Ella Susan Leonard and her husband, Kevin, of Bennington; her grandchildren, Nicholas Charron, Hans C.Peterson,Frances Charron, Jared P. Stemp, Ryan J. Peterson, Nathan William Pacher, Jessica Leonard, Nicholas Leonard and Michael Azzaro; her great-grandchildren, Benjamin Charron, Jeremy Charron, Aiden Charron and Tyler James Waldron; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Ann Peterson; a grandson, Tyson Stemp; a sister, Mary Souza; and a brother-in-law, George Souza.

FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from THE MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME on Friday, Feb. 19, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. with a prayer, and then from Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church at 11 a.m. where the Mass of Christian Burial will be offered. The burial will take place in the family lot in White Chapel Cemetery in Bennington. Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.
