WINHALL -- Barbara McCarty, 64, of Winhall, passed away in her home surrounded by her loving family and her many devoted friends on May 4, 2007. Barbara was a mother of two children. She was a fund raiser and champion of community non-profit organizations. As a community builder she enabled worthy projects to happen.

Barbara was born on Sept. 30, 1942, in Passaic, N.J., the daughter of Margaret (Farley) and John A. Dorman. Barbara married the love of her life, Douglas Joe McCarty, in March of 1964. Doug predeceased her by 37 years, almost to the day. She was a graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University, Rutherford, N.J., and earned her masters degree in counseling from Anitoch College in New Hampshire. She was the founding director of the Stratton Foundation which, under her leadership, gave $400,000 to the Stratton Community over the past 10 years. Barbara also worked for Jimmie Heuga Foundation as New England Regional Events Coordinator. Prior to her fund raising activities, Barbara was a Realtor and a special education teacher.

A memorial service is planned for 12 p.m. at the Chapel of the Snows, Stratton Mountain, on Wednesday, May 9, 2007. A reception will follow at the Stratton Mountain Lodge at 1 p.m.

Barbara is survived by her daughters Terri and son-in-law Brian Mateer of Woodstock, N.Y., and Kym McCarty of Nairobi, Kenya. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Barbara’s memory to the Barbara McCarty Grants in care of the Stratton Foundation, P.O. Box 431, Bondville, VT 05340. Brewster Funeral Service of Manchester has been entrusted with her arrangements.
