Obituary Condolences

Barbara Morgan Adams

1925 - 2014 POWNAL Word has been received of the death of Barbara (Morgan) Adams in Philadelphia, PA on Nov. 29, 2014. She was 89. Barbara was born on July 23, 1925 in Pownal, where her ancestors included some of the earliest settlers of the State of Vermont. She received her education first in Pownal in a one room school through eighth grade, and was graduated from Bennington High School in 1943. She had a scholarship to UVM, where she accelerated to graduate in 1946. She began her teaching career in Middlebury High School the same year. On July 20, 1947 she married Kirt Allard Adams of Bennington, returning here to teach English at BHS. Barbara and Kirt built a home in East Pownal where they thought they would always live, but fate intervened. In 1952, on the day their first child was born, a union vote at EZ Mills determined that the Bennington mill would close, ending Kirt's job. They chose to move to Pennsylvania, where Kirt found a similar management position and where they raised their family. Barbara eventually returned to teaching and earned three masters degrees, including one in library science. Barbara is survived by her husband of 67 years, Kirt A. Adams of Lafayette Hill, PA, and three children: Kirt W. Adams and wife, Joanne of North Danville, VT; Peter M. Adams and wife, Karen of West Chester, PA; and Carolyn L. Adams, Esq., of South Ryegate, VT; five grandchildren, many cousins, nieces and nephews, as well as generations of students in Vermont and Pennsylvania. She was predeceased by her parents, William Barber Morgan and Ada (Morgan) Morgan, of Pownal VT, and her sisters, Lucy (Morgan) Woodward, Ada Ruth Morgan, and Rachel (Morgan) Sargent, all of New London NH. A private committal service in Park Lawn Cemetery, Bennington, VT. is planned in the spring. A fuller obituary can be found at www.vermontobits.org
