Barbara Twomey Obituary
Barbara Twomey

1926 - 2016 The creative, outspoken, free spirit of Barbara Moore Twomey took wing Thursday, June 30, 2016. Barbara was 89 years old and had recently lived at 76 Cluett Dr. in Williamstown, MA, until her last four months, which she spent in the warm and capable hands of both Bayada Hospice and the staff of Rose Lane at Fillmore Pond in Bennington, VT, where she died. She was born in Miami, FL, December 22, 1926, the daughter of the late Floyd James Moore and Vera Mae (Smith) Moore. By the time she was 14, she and her parents had moved north to Queens, NY. An avid student of Greek and Latin at Jamaica High School, she was an honors student at Queens College, where she met her husband-to-be, Michael Twomey. They graduated in 1948 with Barbara as president of the class. On October 8, 1949, they were married at Saint John's Episcopal Church in Flushing, Long Island. As Michael's career unfolded, they moved a few times - to Dallas and Houston, TX and to Tulsa, OK. Barbara did graduate work in child psychology in Tulsa and Houston, although her studies were interrupted when Michael was once again transferred for his work with American International Underwriters. When Barbara and Michael moved to NYC, where they then lived for 33 years, she studied oil painting and found she had a love of and gift for portraits. Once Americans were allowed into Russia and China, she got the first flights she could, sometimes accompanied by her husband. She had long hoped to visit Cuba one day, but illness prevented it. The Twomeys traveled the world together on Michael's business trips, spent several winters in London, and retired to Scotland for half of each year between 1985 and 2000. She never lost her delight in April's baby lambs and smiling daffodils. She loved them almost as much as the cats she kept in spite of being severely allergic. This woman of great charm and elegance is survived by her husband, Michael, the love of her life and their daughter, Celia Twomey, both of Williamstown. Barbara was pre-deceased by her half-sister, Joyce H. Moore of Morenci, AZ. A memorial service will be announced. Guest book condolences may be made at www.maharandsonfuneralhome.net
