Obituary Condolences

Bela Szigetvari 1941-2010 BENNINGTON Bela Szigetvari, passed away quietly at the Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center. Friends and many in the skiing community will miss him. Bela was loved by many for his soft humor, charming personality and engaging ways. Born in Budapest, Hungary in 1941, he fled at the age of 16 to Italy after demonstrating against the Russian occupation of his homeland. From Italy, Bela immigrated to the USA in 1959. He served for two years as a member of the Armed Services Ski Patrol on the Zugspitz in Bavaria. After being honorably discharged, Bela lived and worked in NYC for the Chemical Bank in Greenwich Village. There, he enjoyed serving the local merchants and recording artists. During his time in NYC Bela decided to return to his passion of skiing and began teaching part time at Stratton Mountain Resort. Bela met Alice Pezzulich while in NY, and they eventually moved to Magog, Canada where they started a craft boutique. He was a fine leather craftsman, adopting the style of his native Hungary into his work. Sadly, Alice predeceased Bela in 1974. Soon after her death, Bela resumed a 30 year profession of alpine ski instruction at Stratton Mountain, where he endeared himself to so many and enjoyed exceptional friendships. Honoring Bela's last wishes, he will be cremated without ceremony and laid to rest beside his beloved Alice in Canada, together again. Bela has no living relatives and is survived by many lifelong friends who wish to thank the staff at the Bennington Rehab for their endless patience and loving care. A memorial service is planned in his memory at Stratton Mountain Resort in early February. Details will be published prior. Should friends desire, memorial gifts in memory of Bela may be made to SVMC Regional Cancer Center in care of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, 213 West Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
