BENNINGTON -- Bernadette Marie Gemmell, 71, a resident of County Street, died Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2005, at the Crescent Manor Care Center in Bennington.

She was born in Bennington, Sept. 16, 1934. She was the daughter of the late Jules and Ida (Croteau) Marcoux. She received her education in Bennington and attended Mount Saint Mary’s in Burlington. Bernadette attended a nursing school in Pittsfield where she received her degree as an licensed practical nurse. Bernadette married Kenneth A. Gemmell, May 24, 1968, in Bennington.

In earlier years, Bernadette was employed as an LPN at Crescent Manor Nursing Home, Putnam Memorial Hospital and Sourdiffes Nursing Home. More recently she was a cook at the VFW Post 1332 and was actively planning bus trips to casinos for senior citizens. For many years she owned and operated Bernie’s Catering, where she catered many weddings.

She enjoyed playing bingo and talking on her CB radio where her handle was “Big Bird.” She loved to be on the go and in earlier years was an avid roller skater for which she won several competitions. She was a member of the VFW Post 1332 Auxiliary and the Manchester Eagles Auxiliary. She was a former member of the American Legion Post 13 and the Bennington Moose Club.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth A. Gemmell of Bennington; three daughters, Gloria A. Beraldi and her husband James of Dalton, Mass., Kathleen M. Hanson and her husband Richard of Oakville, Conn., Pauline V. Garofano and her husband Gary of Dallas, Ga.; two sons, William H. Volkmer III and his wife Starr of Bennington and Charles W. Forrest III and his wife Kimberly of Hoosick Falls, N.Y.; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a nephew. She was predeceased by a sister, Rita Lockwood.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Friday, Sept. 23, 2005, at 9:30 a.m. and then from Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church at 10 a.m. where the liturgy of Christian death and burial will be offered. The burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. The wake service will be offered at 6 p.m.
