Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- Funeral services for Bernadette M. Gemmell were held Friday, Sept. 23, 2005, from Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church where the liturgy of Christian death and burial was offered by the Rev. James Preskenis, pastor. Organist was Donald McMahon and soloist was Monica Murray. Hymns offered during the funeral Mass were “Here I Am Lord,” “On Eagles Wings,” “Amazing Grace,” “Ave Maria” and “Prayer of Saint Francis.”

The funeral pall that covered Bernadette’s casket during the Mass was placed by her children, Gloria A. Beraldi, Kathleen M. Hanson, Pauline V. Garofano, William H. Volkmer III and Charles W. Forrest III. A wooden cross was then placed on the casket by Bernadette’s husband, Kenneth.

The scriptural readings were offered by two grandchildren, Christine Jameson and Britni Beraldi and the offertory gifts were presented by a grandson, Mark Volkmer, and three great-grandchildren, Tyler D’Anthony, Nick Gaudette and Corey Gaudette. A eulogy was offered by Bernadette’s granddaughter, Heather O’Donnell. Bearers were eight grandsons, Steve Forrest, Kenneth Volkmer, Charles Volkmer, Paul Volkmer, Jeremy Beraldi, Shane Beraldi, Gary Garofano and Phillip Garofano. Serving as acolytes were Joseph Anton, Gerald Amadon, Leonard Anzivino and Barth Vander Els.

A prayer service at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home preceded the funeral mass. Prior to the prayer Bernadette’s grandson Paul Volkmer sang “Where Is Love,” he was accompanied by Jan Burnett on piano. Following the prayer, a special song, “Wind Beneath My Wings,” was played.

The burial took place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery with Father Preskenis offering the committal prayers. Following the services a reception was held at the Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Parish Center.

Thursday evening Father Vincent Coppolla, associate pastor of Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Church, offered the wake service.

Mrs. Bernadette M. Gemmell, a resident of County Street in Bennington, died Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2005.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home in Bennington.
