NORTH BENNINGTON Funeral services for Bernard A. Whitman were held on Friday, Jan. 23, 2004 at the North Bennington Baptist Church with the Rev. Penny Rich Smith, pastor of the North Bennington Congregational Church, officiating.

Assisting on the altar was the Rev. Michael A. DeMasi, who offered the prayer of thanksgiving. Music for the service was provided by organist Phebe Ann Lewis who accompanied the congregation in singing “I Love To Tell the Story,” “Rock of Ages” and “He Leadeth Me.” Personal tributes and memories were offered by a son, Arthur Whitman, and family friends Larry Powers, Dennis McCarthy and Robert Mackey.

Serving as bearers were Mr. Whitman’s grandsons Mark Whitman, Jeff Whitman, Jason Gordon, Michael Gordon, Jay Prouty, Seth Gordon, Whitman Dailey and Graham Dailey. Honorary bearer was Robert Mackey.

Burial took place in the Whitman family lot in Center Shaftsbury Cemetery with the Rev. Rich Smith offering the committal prayers. A time of fellowship and refreshment was held in the parish hall of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church hosted by the hospitality committee.

Among the many friends, relatives and business associates of the Whitman family attending the calling hours and services was a delegation from the Norshaft Lions Club of which Mr. Whitman was a charter member.

Mr. Whitman, 83, a resident of Mattison Road died unexpectedly Sunday, Jan. 18 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington.

Arrangements were under the care of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, Bennington.
