1924 - 2015 BENNINGTON Mr. Bernard A. Murray, 91, a resident of Houran Road died peacefully Friday evening at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington following a brief illness. He was born in Bennington, VT Feb. 10, 1924. He was the son of the late Ernest Murray and Angelina (Brien) Murray. He received his education in Bennington where he attended Sacred Heart School and Bennington High School. He married the former Barbara R. Jacobs on October 24, 1953. Mrs. Murray died September 28, 2009. He served in the 552 Field Artillery Batallion in the European Theatre during World War II. For 40 years Bernie was employed at the A&P in Bennington from which he retired. For 22 years he worked at the Bennington Monument. Bernie was a town selectman for several terms. While in high school Bernie was a very good athlete, he excelled in football, basketball and baseball. He later became an avid golfer and bowler. He also enjoyed playing cards especially pitch and cribbage. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends Survivors include his children and their spouses, Dennis Murray and Janis of Bennington, Ray Murray and Donna Main of Bennington, Jeff Murray and Karen of Bennington, Lynn Trefry and Hal of Bennington, VT and Larry Murray and Eileen of Bennington, three grandchildren, Justin Murray and his wife, Karla, Trevor Murray and Brianna Murray all of Bennington; a great-granddaughter, MaKenna Murray of Bennington; A brother, Raymond Murray of Austin, Texas and a sister, Theresa Allard of Bennington, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two brothers, Ernest L. Murray and Robert Morin and a sister, Lorraine Ordway. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 25 at 11a.m. The burial will take place in the family lot at Park Lawn Cemetery in Bennington where military honors will be offered. Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Tuesday November 24 from 4 to 6p.m. If friends desire contributions in memory of Bernard A. Murray may be made to the Vermont Veterans Home Activities Fund through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
