Obituary Condolences

WILMINGTON -- Bernice Estella (Eggleton) (Kiamie) Pezaro, 87, a former resident of Ray Hill Road, died Monday morning, Oct. 17, 2005, at the Crescent Manor Care Centers in Bennington as a result of complications of diabetes. She died peacefully, surrounded by her daughter, Linda Kersten, and three grandchildren, Douglas, Jodi and James.

Mrs. Pezaro was born in Starlight, Pa., on May 16, 1918, the daughter of the late Charles and Kathryn (Muranie) Eggleton. At age 16 she moved to Long Island, N.Y., to care for the children of a doctor and his wife. There she met and married her cherished husband, Haleem Kiamie.

Following Hal’s untimely death in 1950, Bernice held various jobs to support herself and her young daughter. She served as a welder during the Korean War, of which she was very proud. Her final and longest career was selling jewelry.

On June 23, 1968, she married Walter H. Pezaro in Rockville Center, N.Y. They moved to Vermont in the 1970s. Mr. Pezaro died May 3, 1995. Though a New York resident most of her life, Bernice moved to Vermont after the birth of her third grandchild to be closer to Linda and her family, about whom she wrote, “No love is greater than my love for my beloved daughter and grandchildren.”

She enjoyed ceramics and cooking. She was also an animal lover and a voracious reader, continuing her love of reading by listening to books on tape when her failing eyesight would not allow her to read herself.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Henry “Mickey” Kersten of West Dover; her three grandchildren, Douglas Keith Levin of Maui, Hawaii, Jodi Gabrielle Levin of Berkeley, Calif., and James Alexander Kersten of South Royalton; two great-grandchildren, Samuel Oak Cowles and Declan Patrick Levin; and a sister, Evelyn Santiago of Roscoe, N.Y.

Graveside funeral services will be held on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 2 p.m. in the family lot in Wheeler Hill Cemetery in Pleasant Mount, Pa., with the Rev. Donald Roberts officiating.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Talking Books Program of the Library of Congress in care of the Covey & Allen Funeral Home, P.O. Box 215, Wilmington, VT 05363.
