NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Bernice Elva (Lavanway) Polucci, 73, of Mohawk Forest Boulevard, North Adams, died Friday, Oct. 3, 2003 at her home following a lengthy illness.

She was born in North Adams on June 9, 1930, a daughter of Mrs. Earlene Bessie (Bowen) Lavanway and the late Harold Ervin Lavanway. She attended the Monroe Bridge Elementary School and graduated Drury High School in North Adams, with the Class of 1948.

She was first employed with the former North Adams Dress Company in North Adams and later with the former W.T. Grant Store on Main Street in North Adams until it closed. She returned to the North Adams Dress Company until she became associated with the former North Adams Trust Company on Main Street, North Adams and its successor the Berkshire Bank until her retirement in 1992 with more than 21 years of banking service. Following her retirement, she was employed as an accountant in the accounting department of the Northern Berkshire Mental Health Office in North Adams.

She was a resident of Clarksburg from 1958 to 1972 and served as a secretary for the Clarksburg Board of Selectmen for more than five years. She also was a resident of Pittsfield from 1972 to 1982 while she was employed with the Berkshire Bank. She returned to North Adams in 1982 and was a longtime volunteer with the Elder Services of Northern Berkshire.

She was also active in several community organizations including the South Readsboro, Vt. Community Club, the North Adams Historical Society where she served as treasurer for two years, The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #996 Auxiliary and the American Legion Post #125 Auxiliary of North Adams.

Her husband was John Dominick Polucci, whom she married on June 19, 1948 in St. John’s Episcopal Church of North Adams. He died on Feb. 13, 1980.

Survivors include three sons, Gregory V. Polucci of Adams, Mass., Jeffrey P. Polucci of North Adams, Mass. and Ashley V. Polucci of West Springfield, Mass. and a granddaughter, Tammi Jean Dunham and a great-granddaughter Savannah Dunham and her mother, Earlene B. (Bowen) Lavanway of North Adams, Mass. and three sisters Mrs. Myrna Harvey of Clarksburg, Mrs. Alta Wood of Winter City, Ariz., and Mrs. Sandra Goodermote of Monroe and a brothe,r Harold B. Lavanway of Clarksburg, Mass. and nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

A funeral will take place Monday, Oct. 6, 2003 at the Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals Central Chapels, 74 Marshall Street, North Adams with the Rev. John R. Brigham, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Readsboro, officiating.

Private burial and committal services will take place in the family plot in the South Readsboro Cemetery.

Calling hours at the funeral home are Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested for the Eileen Barrett Foundation, the VNA and Hospice of the Northern Berkshire or the First Baptist Church of Readsboro, Vt. through the Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, Mass. 01247 which is in charge of the arrangements.
