NORTH BROOKFIELD, Mass. -- Bernice F. Nykiel, loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, 81, of Nursery Avenue, died on Wednesday, June 23, 2004 at the Bennington Health & Rehabilitation Center in Bennington, Vt.

She is survived by a son, Richard Nykiel and his wife Nancy of North Brookfield; a daughter, Susan Nykiel and her husband Ray Bub of Pownal, Vt.; two sisters, Ida Hamel of North Brookfield and Helen Wolven of West Brookfield; grandchildren Andrea and Pamela Nykiel and Kelsey and Linley Nykiel-Bub; and close friends Sue Bliss, Diane McGrath, and Irene Newman. She was predeceased by a son, David, two sisters, Josephine Borglund and Veronica Fountain, and a brother, James Zackarevicz.

Bernice was born in Worcester in 1922, a daughter of the late John Anthony Pocis and Josephine Zackarevicz. She lived most of her life in North Brookfield, except for her early years in Worcester and her Navy service in Georgia and Boston as a WAVE in World War II. Bernice was a North Brookfield assessor and a real estate agent. She also worked as a health care aide at Belchertown State Hospital and Spencer Apartments for Assisted Living. She enjoyed the ocean in Ogunquit, Maine and loved spending time with her family, grandchildren and friends. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 26 at 10 a.m. at the Pillsbury Funeral Home, 44 Gilbert St., North Brookfield. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery, Elm St. Calling hours will be on Friday, June 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
