BENNINGTON -- Bertha E. (Gates) Pierce, 81, formerly of Mineral Springs Road, Melrose, died Friday, Nov. 12, 2004, at her Crescent Manor Care Center residence in Bennington following a long illness.

Born in White Creek, N.Y. June 22, 1923, Mrs. Pierce was the daughter of the late Ella (Gates) Young and the wife of the late Lawrence E. Pierce. Mr. Pierce predeceased her in January 1995.

Mrs. Pierce was educated in the White Creek District School.

As a young woman, she was employed by several mills, including the former Undergarment Mfg. Co. in Hoosick Falls, N.Y., Union Carbide in Bennington and most recently, for over 30 years as a seamstress at the former Glenmaid Mfg. Co. in Troy, N.Y. She retired in 1982.

Mrs. Pierce was homemaker in Melrose for more than 40 years before becoming a resident at Crescent Manor in 1999. She was a member of the White Creek Methodist Church, enjoyed traveling and camping at Lake Luzerne in the Adirondacks, was an avid reader and enjoyed her pets.

Her survivors include a sister, Florence R. Jones of North Pownal; a brother, John Young of Hoosick Falls; a stepson, Loren Pierce of Ft. Fairfield, Maine; a niece and nephew; and three step-grandchildren. Two brothers, James and Roland Young, predeceased her.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, Nov. 20, at 11 a.m. at the Rosewood Cemetery in White Creek.

There will be no calling hours.
