Bertha Mae Russell, 64, of Homestead Mews, North Bennington passed away December 1, 2016 at the Bennington Health & Rehab Center surrounded by her family after a long fight with cancer.

Bertha was born in Cambridge, NY on March 27, 1952. She was the daughter of the late Harry and Carolyn (Goodell) Harrington. She was raised in White Creek, N.Y. After her marriage to Leland Russell, Jr., on December 9, 1972 in the Woodford Church, Woodford, VT she resided in North Bennington, VT.

In earlier years, Bertha was employed at Shea Manufacturing, and spent many years as a kind and loving babysitter to neighborhood children. She was sole caregiver for her husband Leland until her health failed.

Bertha's main interest was her family. She is survived by her husband, Leland who is a resident of Bennington Health & Rehab also, a daughter Joann (Matt) Russell, and son Jason (Jennifer) Russell, two granddaughters Payton and Tylee Russell, who were the light of her life and whom she loved dearly, and 2 step-grandchildren Kelsey Florio and Haley Gaudette. She is also survived by three brothers; Paul Harrington of White Creek, NY, Harry Harrington, Jr (Mary) of Valley Falls, NY and Carl Harrington of Troy, NY; two sisters Marilyn (Ron) Gallett of Eagle Bridge, NY and Patricia Haynes of Hoosick Falls, NY. Two sisters-in-law; Diane Becker and Ginny Neizi, many cousins, nieces and nephews She is predeceased by a sister Carolyn.

Bertha will be remembered as a kind and caring person who put her family and whoever needed help, ahead of herself.

A Memorial service will be held at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St. Bennington on Thursday, December 8, 2016 at 1:00PM by Pastor Jim Bartholomew. Burial in Hinsdillville Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family.

If friends desire, contributions may be made Payton and Tylee Russell for their education at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home in Bennington. A gathering to celebrate Bertha's life will be held after the first of the year.
