Betty Jane George 1923 - 2011 BENNINGTON Betty Jane George, 87, of East Main Street died peacefully at her home on Wednesday evening, June 8, 2011, surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. George was born in Punxsutawney, Pa., on Dec. 23, 1923. The daughter of Marion and Ida Smith, she grew up in New York and was a graduate of Oswego College where she received her teaching degree. She loved teaching and had taught students in communities in Long Island, Upstate New York and Connecticut. For many years, she and her husband, Gerald operated the Mount Holly General Store after which they retired to Bennington. She was a member of the Mt. Holly Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, Mt. Holly Grange and was very active in The First United Methodist Church of Bennington. Mrs. George enjoyed traveling with her husband, gardening and was a volunteer at The Bennington Museum. She leaves her husband, Gerald George, whom she married Jan. 4, 1947, in Canastota, N.Y.; sons and daughters-in-law, Gerald P. and Betty Sue George of Newton, Conn., and Steven and Connie George of Wallingford; daughters and sons-in-laws, Barbara Ann and Ernie Stricsek of Westford, Mass., and Debra and Richard Hawkins of East Wallingford; brothers, Dale Smith of Canastota, N.Y., and Myron and wife, Effie, Smith of Inverness, Fla.; sisters, Joanne Berner of Cobleskill, N.Y., and Dorothy Edson of Elliott, Maine; grandsons, Jeff and Jeremy Stricsek, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 14, at 10 a.m. at the HANSON-WALBRIDGE FUNERAL HOME with the Rev. Gary Dickson, pastor of the Pownal First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Gerald B.H. Solomon National Cemetery in Schuylerville, N.Y. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 5 to7 p.m. when the family will be present.
