BENNINGTON -- Betty Mayer, 68, the wife of Robert J. Mayer, a resident of East Road in Bennington, died on Wednesday, Nov. 8, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.

Born in North Bennington on March 8, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Ida (Hurley) Sweet. She received her education in the Bennington and North Bennington schools.

Bob and Betty were married in Bennington on Feb. 18, 1955. For many years Betty was active with her husband in the operation of Bob’s Rubbish Service, until their retirement in 1996.

Betty was a member of both the VFW Auxillary and the Women of the Moose. She enjoyed playing Bingo, visiting casinos, traveling and spending winters in Florida.

Survivors include her husband, Robert J. Mayer of Bennington; two daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Brien Gervais of North Bennington and Wanda and Ivan Matte of Cambridge, N.Y.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert G. and Wilda Mayer of Eagle Bridge, N.Y., and Ronald and Kelly Mayer of Bennington; five grandchildren, Darci Snow and her husband Clint, Tracy Buggee and her husband Doug, Robby Hurley, Kayla Mayer and Deidre Matte; a great-grandson, Aidan Buggee; two sisters, Josephine Colvin of Bennington and Sadie Rice of Pownal; a brother, Jack Sweet of Bennington; several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Mayer was predeceased by eight brothers and sisters, Irene Mears, Lillian Muckle, Anna Mears, Steven Jacobs, Richard Sweet, Robert Sweet, Francis Sweet and Joseph Sweet.

Memorial services celebrating the life of Betty Mayer will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Friday, Nov. 10, at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Michael A Demasi officiating.

At Mrs. Mayer’s request, there will be no calling hours.

Burial will take place in the family lot in White Chapel Cemetery.
