WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Betty Margaret Brookman Walker, 87, widow of Rufus Mason Walker, a resident of Chestnut Street, Williamstown, died unexpectedly at home on Friday, Aug. 12, 2005. Born on Hancock Road in South Williamstown on Dec. 3, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Ronald Charles and Ada Christie (Bratcher) Brookman.

She moved to Pownal, Vt., at an early age where she lived on the family farm on Brookman Road. She received her schooling at the Oak Hill School in Pownal.

Mr. and Mrs. Walker were married in Argyle, N.Y., in February 1936 and at the time of Mr. Walker’s death on Aug. 8, 2001, they had been married for 65 years. In earlier years Mr. and Mrs. Walker operated a family farm on the Petersburgh Road in Williamstown. Mrs. Walker was an early crusader in the environmental movement and was very concerned about making people aware of the need to protect wildlife, especially birds, from exposure to the many pesticides that would harm nature. She enjoyed organic gardening, hiking and bird watching. At one time she was very active in the 4H club in Pownal and won many awards for her creative cooking and baking. She also was a avid reader of the history of Williamstown and the surrounding area and a loyal fan of the New York Yankees.

Survivors include six daughters, Eleanor Adams of Hancock, Elizabeth Brooks Wile of Williamstown, Louise Bronson of Lisbon, N.H., Ruth Fortin, Nancy Walker and Mary LaCasse, all of North Adams; a son, Charles Walker of North Adams; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; two brothers, James Brookman of Pownal and David Brookman of Middlebury, Vt.; a sister, Belva Babcock of Clarksburg and a sister-in-law, Bernice Walker of North Adams; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins. Mrs. Walker was predeceased by two sons, William Henry Walker and John David Walker; two grandchildren, Kristin Marie Walker and David Charles Walker; a sister, Ellen Fosselman and two brothers, Edward and Charles Brookman.

The funeral will be Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2005, at Sherman Burbank Memorial Chapel in Williamstown at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Peter Daniels, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Williamstown, officiating.

Friends may call at the George M. Hopkins Funeral Home in Williamstown on Monday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Eastlawn Cemetery, Wiliamstown.
