SOUTH BARRE -- Brenda J. Blakeney, 64, formerly of South Barre, died Feb. 25, 2005, at the Central Vermont Hospital in Berlin. For the past several years she had been a resident of the Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Born Aug. 6, 1940, in Websterville, she was the daughter of Homer and Marguerite (Mercier) Couillard. She graduated from Spaulding High School in Barre in the Class of 1958. In 1970, she married David Blakeney in St. Sylvester Catholic Church in Graniteville. They made their home in Lower Graniteville before moving to South Barre in 1973. They later divorced. For three years she made her home with her daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Jeremy Emmons before moving to the Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center. For 10 years she had worked for the Granite Mutual Insurance Company and the Union Mutual Company until her retirement due to ill health.

Brenda was a member of St. Monica Catholic Church in Barre and of the Catholic Daughters of America. In earlier years, she was a Cub Scout den mother, a Brownie leader and a Girl Scout assistant leader.

Survivors include her daughter, Judith Ann “Judy” Emmons of Barre Town; her son, Timothy David Blakeney of Bennington; five grandchildren, a niece, a nephew and former husband. Besides her parents, two sisters, Cecelia Paxman, and Mary Ann Couillard, predeceased her.
