Obituary Condolences

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Bryant Whitman Dennison died on Friday, Nov. 17, 2006, at Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge in Charlottesville.

Whit was born on April 26, 1921, in Warren, Ohio, to David Short Dennison and Cordelia Whitman Dennison. He was preceded in death by his brother, David S. Dennison, and his wife of 59 years, Mary Shreiner Dennison. He is survived by his sister, Kate Tregoning; four children, Bryant, Peter, Tim and Kate; 10 grandchildren and many nephews and nieces.

Whit graduated in 1943 from Williams College in Williamstown, Mass., and then immediately joined the Navy. Following the war, Whit’s vision for human justice and peace led him from a successful business career to ordained ministry in the Episcopal Church. He served churches in Oberlin, Norwalk, Gambier and Canton, Ohio, Missoula, Mont., and Williamstown, Mass. He and Mary retired to North Bennington, Vt., in 1985 until 2000 when they moved to Charlottesville.

Throughout his adult life Whit challenged himself and others to a life of service in nonviolent witness, environmental protection and social justice. He possessed a special ability to see beyond human differences and accepted individuals in whatever circumstance to celebrate their common humanity. Services of celebration are planned for late December in Charlottesville and next summer in Pilgrim, Mich.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Episcopal Relief and Development, 815 2nd Avenue, NY, NY 10017. Friends may sign the guest book at www.hillandwood.com
