POWNAL Burton Leon Peckham peacefully passed away Wednesday morning, July 22, 2015 at his home in Pownal, VT.He was 80 years old. He graduated from Bennington High School in 1953. Burt inherited the responsibilities of his family's farm at the age of 18 when his father, Leon, unexpectedly passed away. In 1957, he married Carolyn Coulter. Burt was a dedicated dairy farmer for over 37 years. He also served his community as a Town Lister and Selectman. In 1991, he and his wife started Peckham's Farm and Greenhouses, known locally for its beautiful flowers. Burt was a perfectionist. He was loyal to his land while tending to his animals, fields and greenhouses. He was a trusted friend and neighbor, as well as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather (affectionately known as Papa). The only son of Leon and Avis (Myers) Peckham, Burt is survived by his wife, Carolyn, and their four daughters: Sarah Peckham (C. Hunter Scribner), Sandra (Steven) Capriola, Susan (Tyre K.) Jones, and Sharon (Kenneth) Terry. He leaves seven grandchildren: Jennifer Capriola (Thomas) Sullivan, Kimberly Capriola, Kevin Capriola, Kristen Jones, Lauren Jones, Erin (Richard) McCann, and Brandon Terry, as well as three great-grandsons: Gavin and Maddox McCann, and Gabriel Sullivan. The family would like to thank Burt's dedicated caregivers, compassionate friends, neighbors, and community for their constant help and support. FUNERAL NOTICE: Calling hours will be held at Mahar and Sons Funeral Home on Main Street in Bennington, VT on Friday, July 24th from 5 to 8 pm. Funeral services will be held at the same location at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 25, 2015. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Pownal. Memorial contributions in Burt Peckham's memory may be made to either the Sustainable Agriculture Foods Program at the Career Development Center in Bennington or to the Bennington Area VNA & Hospice through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
