Obituary Condolences

C. Edward Rice 1928 - 2008 BENNINGTON C. Edward Rice, 79, of East Road passed away at his home on Sunday, March 23, 2008, after struggling to overcome cancer in recent months. Born in Bennington on June 25, 1928, son of Clark S. and Lillian Shortt Rice, he received his education in the Bennington area schools and was a 1946 graduate of Bennington High School. For twenty years, he was employed at the Bijur Manufacturing Company, later at Eagle Square in Shaftsbury, the Bennington Banner, and then as a bus driver for the Mount Anthony and Arlington School districts. Ed's resourcefulness also resulted in him having his own milk can business. He was also known as the "Cotton Candy Man" with his homemade concession wagon which was visible at many area social events. He was a charter member of the Bennington Rural Fire Department, a member of the Bennington Lodge of Moose, and a past president of the Bennington Club. Ed was instrumental in the formation of the Bennington area Umpires Association. In earlier years, Ed enjoyed dancing, especially square dancing and clogging. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. In his later years, macular degeneration took his ability to see the world in all its glory, but with the spirit to give, he, along with his son, Paul, and daughter-in -law, Susan, successfully raised dogs for Guiding Eyes for the Blind. He was proud of every one of his "granddaughter" puppies. He leaves his wife, the former Jean Nelson, whom he married Aug. 20, 1949 at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington. Besides his wife, he leaves six sons and their spouses, Stephan and Debi Rice of Bainbridge, N.Y., Shawn Rice of Grantville, Pa., Paul and Susan Rice of Bennington, Jeffrey Rice of Moretown, Brian and Debbie Rice of Bennington and Daniel and Lynne Rice of Bennington; two daughters and their husbands, Christine and Larry Herrington of Sunderland, and Bethanne and Dennis Kissel of Manchester, N.H.; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Rice Macauley, and her husband, Albert, of Shaftsbury and a sister-in-law and brother-in law, Jill and Lew Levin of Shaftsbury. FUNERAL NOTICE: At the request of Mr. Rice, there will be no calling hours. The Funeral Mass will be held at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington on Saturday, March 29, 2008 at 9 a.m. where the Mass of Resurrection, will be offered.
