HOOSICK, N.Y. -- C. Sherman Cottrell, 84, died Saturday June 4 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, Vt. He lived on Shingle Hollow Road in Hoosick with his wife Emmajane (Babcock) Cottrelll, whom he married on Oct. 28, 1944.

Sherman was bom on Dec. 20, 1920 on the family farm located on Wilson HilI Road in the town of Hoosick, son of the late Ernest and Edith (Filkins) Cottrell. He graduated from the Hoosick Falls High School. Sherman operated the family dairy farm for many years and then worked as a carpenter in the greater Troy area. He later worked as the caretaker at the Senior Citizen’s Building in Hoosick Falls, retiring several years ago.

Sherman was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church in Hoosick Falls and a member of the Hoosick Grange. He enjoyed reading and was an avid gardener. He continued his interest in farming by helping his nephew Dany at his farm in Hoosick.

Survivors other than his wife, Emmajane, include two sons, James Cottrell and his wife Jeannie of Bennington and Peter Cottrell and his wife Susan of Manchester, Vt.; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by a brother, Gordon Cottrell.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. from the First Baptist Church on Main Street in Hoosick Falls. Burial will follow the service at Maple Grove Cemetery in Hoosick Falls.

Relatives and friends may call at the Mahar Funeral Horne, 43 Main St. in Hoosick Falls on Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Town of Hoosick Rescue Squad through the funeral home.
