Carl K. Moses

1919-2010 EAGLE BRIDGE, NY Carl King Moses, 90, died peacefully at Southern Vermont Medical Center on Sunday, May 2, 2010, following a short illness. At his side was Shirley Harrison Moses, his loving wife of 68 years.

Born Saturday, Aug. 9, 1919, the youngest child of Forrest King and Mary Brown Moses, Carl was one of the first babies born at Mary McClellan Hospital in Cambridge, N.Y. After attending several one-room schoolhouses, Carl graduated from Hoosick Falls High School in 1936.

Carl and Shirley were married on Nov. 30, 1941. Upon returning from their honeymoon, the couple settled in Eagle Bridge, where Carl lived the remainder of his life.

In the early 1950s Carl, along with his brother and father, started Moses Vegetable Stand. During the winter months they built homes in the area. Carl also was a machinist at Eagle Bridge Machine and Tool Company.

Carl had a lifelong love of fishing which lasted right to the end as he fished in his pond this spring. He was always a baseball fan. In the 1950s he hosted a World Series party with guests watching on one of the first TVs in Eagle Bridge.

After retiring from the farm in 1981, Carl and Shirley enjoyed traveling. Often Carl entertained his fellow travelers on senior bus trips with his numerous jokes. He also became an avid golfer and always found time for farming and raising vegetables.

Carl is predeceased by his brother, Gerald; his sister, Betty McCart; and an infant daughter, Carol.

In addition to his wife, he leaves six children, Sherry (Richard) Somerset of Essex Center, Vt., Gayle (Norman) Hahn of Gloucester, Va., Cindy (Ken) Gottery, of Cambridge, Richard (Kathy) Moses of Eagle Bridge, Nancy (Jack) Alexander of Eagle Bridge, and Sue (Richard) Akin of Johnsonville.

Carl, the grandson of Grandma Moses, the American painter, also leaves behind 15 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Friends and relatives are invited to call on Wednesday, May 5 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at ACKLEY & ROSS FUNERAL HOME, 73 West Main Street, Cambridge, NY.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 6, at 10 a.m. at the Embury United Methodist Church, 41 East Main Street, Cambridge. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, Hoosick Falls.

The family requests memorial donations be made to either the Cambridge Valley Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 52, Cambridge, NY 12816; The Eagle Bridge Methodist Church or the Town of Hoosic Rescue Squad.
