Carl G. Rice 1930-2011 SUNDERLAND, VT Carl G. Rice, 81, a resident of Dunlap Farm Road in Sunderland, passed away peacefully Wednesday November 16, 2011 at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington, with his family by his side. Carl was born in Springfield, Vt., on October 13, 1930 the son of Cleon George and Dorris Allen Rice. At an early age, Carl moved to Chester, Vt., where he attended school and graduated from Chester High School. Carl attended the University of Vermont, John Brown University, and the Renaud School of Embalming. Carl was an Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict era, serving two years in Graves registration in Germany from 1952-1954. Carl was honorably discharged, achieving the rank of Sergeant, First Class. Upon discharge, Carl attended Castleton State College from 1955-1958, graduating with a BS Degree in Education. He went on to St. Joseph's College, earning a Masters Degree in Guidance. Carl taught at Burr & Burton Seminary/Academy, Manchester Elementary School, Bennington Elementary School and was the Business Manager at Manchester Health Services. Carl was also a Guidance Counselor at West Rutland and Arlington High School. Upon retirement, he became a licensed lay minister after graduating from the Vermont Academy of Spiritual Training. He was lay minister at the Peru Church for two and a half years. While at Castleton State, he met and married his wife of fifty-seven years, Gail Moses Rice. At Castleton he was a stand out athlete and still holds the single game home run record in baseball. He was known throughout Vermont for his baseball and softball umpiring and basketball officiating. Carl is survived by his wife Gail of Sunderland, his son Seth & wife Melissa Rice of Manchester and his daughter Sara & husband Joe Silva and their daughter Skylar Elizabeth of Northwood, England and many nieces, nephews and cousins. FUNERAL NOTICE: A celebration of the life of Carl G. Rice will be held Saturday November 26, 2011 at 2 p.m. at the Federated Church of East Arlington. Pastor, Rev. Kathleen Clark will officiate. Interment will be private in the family lot in Ira Allen Cemetery in Sunderland.
