Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- Carleton P. Couch Sr., 78, a resident of Bennington, died Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2005, at the Vermont Veterans Home where he had lived for more than three years.

He was born in Manchester on Sept. 15, 1927, the son of Albert Duncan and Flora (Streeter) Couch and attended local schools. He was a World War II veteran as a member of the United States Navy. Carleton loved to putter with wood, tools and build furniture. He worked as a master furniture craftsman for Pierre’s Gate in Manchester and for several years worked at Cushman Furniture and later at the Readsboro Chair Shop.

He enjoyed playing softball when he was younger and was an avid Red Sox fan. He was a member of the American Legion Post 29 in Readsboro, the Tucker Lodge Free and Accepted Masons in North Bennington and the Rutland Shrine Club.

He is survived by his son, Carleton P. Couch Jr. and his wife Elizabeth of Hoosick Falls, N.Y.; his brother, Leonard Couch of Lebanon, Conn.; two sisters, Eleanor Greenwood of Hoosick Falls and Jean Hackett of Buffalo, N.Y.; his former wife, Virginia (Carbonaro) Couch of North Bennington; two grandchildren, Jamie and Jill Anable; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mildred Bushee, and three brothers, Duncan, Philip and Douglas Couch.

Graveside funeral services for Carleton with full military honors, will be held Saturday, Nov. 12, 2005, at 11 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery at the Vermont Veterans Home. John Foster, chaplain at the Vermont Veterans Home, will conduct the service. The family will receive friends Thursday, Nov. 10, 2005, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, 213 West Main St., Bennington.

Memorial contributions in Carleton’s memory may be made to the Bennington Rescue Squad or the Vermont Veterans Home Activities Fund, c/o Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, P.O.
