Carol Porter Welsh, MS RN MANCHESTER CENTER, VT Carol Porter Welsh, MS RN, 61, A resident of Manchester Center and 34 yr. employee of Rutland Regional Medical Center, Carol passed peacefully with family by her side December 30, 2011. She was born in Orange, N.J., and resided in rural Mendham, N.J.,throughout her youth. She received her RN from Polyclinic Hospital School of Nursing in Harrisburg, Pa., in 1971 and began her nursing career as an ER nurse at Morristown Memorial Hospital in N.J. Upon relocating to Vermont in 1977 with Bruce, her husband of 40 yrs. this past Sept., she began her career at RRMC. She progressed through numerous positions there to her present responsibility as Director of Surgical Services for the past 15 yrs. During that progression, she proudly earned her BS from Castleton and an MS degree from UVM all while raising her young family, daughter Alison, presently a PA in Brunswick, Maine, and Timothy of Dorset, employed by the Orvis Co. In addition to her immediate family, Carol is survived by her mother, Barbara Porter, sister & husband, Christine & Kenneth Steffan, and brother, Thomas Porter, all of New Jersey. She was predeceased by her father, Robert Porter. Also, surviving Carol, are in-laws, Budd & Carol Welsh, brother-in-law, Scott Welsh & wife Lynne, all of Manchester Center, and sister-in-law, Debra Welsh of Salisbury, Md. Numerous nieces from both families also mourn Aunt Carol's loss. Carol was an avid reader and she enjoyed traveling, gardening, cooking, and sewing as well as many outdoor activities. As an accomplished swimmer since her youth, she took great pride in her children's competitive accomplishments in the pool. She also enjoyed following their ice hockey exploits on rinks throughout the northeast, having logged countless cold "hockey mom" hours at RAHA. A public memorial service to celebrate Carol's full, but all too brief life will be held at Grace Congregational Church in Rutland at 1 p.m. Sat., Jan. 14, followed by a 3 p.m. reception at the Howe Center off Strongs Ave. Carol served as a mentor to many nurses during her long career at RRMC and she received the finest medical care through the Foley Cancer Center.
