Reverend Cass Gilbert III 1921 - 2009 BENNINGTON, VT The Reverend Cass Gilbert III, 87, a resident of Pippin Knoll died peacefully at his home on Thursday evening, Jan. 22, 2009 with his loving family by his side. Reverend Gilbert was born in New York City, on March 8, 1921, son of Cass Gilbert Jr. who was born in St. Paul, Minn, and Elizabeth Jarvis Wyeth who was born in New York City, and the grandson of Cass Gilbert, a renowned architect in New York City. Reverend Gilbert graduated from Loomis Preparatory School in Windsor, Conn. He enlisted in the Army during World War II and served as an artillery officer in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and Germany. He was recalled to active duty at the time of the Korean War and served at Fort Ord, Calif., retiring at the rank of Major. He graduated from Yale University with an AB Degree and went on to attend Boston University where he received his Masters Degree in Theology. In 1969, Reverend Gilbert entered into the Methodist Ministry and served churches in Salem, Shushan, West Hebron, Ticonderoga, Greenwich and North Cambridge, N.Y., also in Bennington, Tinmouth and South Wallingford, Vt. Prior to the ministry, reverend Gilbert was an insurance broker with the firm of Bell and Gilbert in New York City. He was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity, Past Master of Holland Lodge No. 8 in New York City, The American Legion, The Veterans of Foreign War and The Society of Cincinnati. Reverend and Mrs. Gilbert moved back to Bennington in 2001. He leaves his wife, Grace Chomley-Jones Gilbert, of Bennington, five children; Cass A. Gilbert, and his wife Beatrice, of North Yarmouth, Maine, Elizabeth Pryor, and husband the Reverend Douglas Pryor, of Winston-Salem, N.C., Sarah Bisaccio, and husband Kevin Bisaccio, of Bennington, Jeannette Allyson, and husband Russell Allyson, of Durham, N.H., Julia Grosvenor Gilbert, and husband Nathan Cleveland, of Charlotte, and 12 grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister Jarvis Nichols. FUNERAL NOTICE: The Burial Office with committal will be celebrated from St. Peter's Episcopal Church on Tuesday, Jan. 27 at 10 a.m. with the Reverend Anita Schell- Lambert, officiating. Following the service, the family will receive friends in the church hall for a time of fellowship and refreshment. Burial with full military honors will take place at 1 p.m. at the Gilbert family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
