Catherine H. Cumpston

1924-2010 Catherine Hume Cumpston "Cappy" died on Jan. 27, at Meadowbrook Health Center in Urbana, Ill.

Born Catherine Hume Maguire on Nov. 23, 1924, in Cambridge, to Mary Hume and John MacArthur Maguire, she attended Shady Hill School and Concord Academy, and graduated from Radcliffe College in 1946. Her sister, Nancy Hoffman, lives in Lutz, Fla.

She married Edward Henry Cumpston IV "Harry" on Aug. 4, 1944, and had three children, Mary, Hank, and Cope. Two are living: Mary (Tsipora Bar Rashi) in Israel and Cope (married to Walter Matherly) in Urbana, Ill. Her husband, Harry, died in 2006.

She leaves six grandchildren; five in Israel, Sarah Matherly in Urbana, Illinois, and four great-grandchildren in Israel.

Cappy worked as Development Director of Bennington College, and as a fundraising consultant for Arthur Raybin Associates. She served on the board of directors of the Bennington Museum, and was active in the Garden Club of America.

She was a talented singer, and was soloist in a number of church choirs. She enjoyed tennis, skiing, dancing and entertaining.

She and her husband, Harry, lived in Massachusetts, New York, and Vermont, and retired to Naples, Fla.
