1920-2010 BENNINGTON Catherine McLeod, 89, a resident of Cory Lane in Bennington, died on Saturday morning, Jan. 30, at her home surrounded by her family.
Born in North Plainfield, N.J., on Feb. 4, 1920, daughter of Arthur A. and Henrietta Blatz Cannon, she received her public Catholic education in North Plainfield, graduating in 1937 from North Plainfield High School. Catherine (known to her friends as "Kay") furthered her education by attending the Katherine Gibbs Business School in New York City and graduated from there in 1938.
She went to work for the Special Service Director at Muhlenberg Hospital. In 1942 she went to work at Belle Mead Army Service Forces Depot, Belle Mead, N.J. to help set up the military Personnel Section. She later became Secretary to the Executive Officer and Adjutant. Catherine remained there until 1946 when the Depot closed.
She married William McLeod of Woodbridge, N.J. on Nov. 15, 1947. They had five children. In 1968 she went to work for the North Plainfield Police Department as the Administrative Assistant in the Records Division, and remained there until 1988 when she retired. Upon retirement she received a Silver Life Badge from the New Jersey State PBA.
Her husband passed away in 1991, and she moved to Bennington in 1992, where they had wanted to retire. She has been an active volunteer at the Bennington Museum, and was the recipient of a Lifetime Membership Award from the Museum. She also volunteered for 13 years at the Bennington Free Library.
Catherine was an avid reader and enjoyed watching golf. She loved gardening and playing word games.
Catherine leaves her sons and daughters-in-law; Michael and Toni of Longview, Wash.; Mark and Jacqueline Blain of Hadley, Mass., Lawrence and Katherine of Bennington, Peter and Christine of Howell, N.J.; and her daughter, Patricia McLeod and her husband, Thomas Oakes, of Bennington. She also leaves six grandsons; Sean, Ryan, Benjamin, Douglas, Andrew and James. Catherine had one granddaughter, Schyler, and one great- granddaughter, Caitlin.
FUNERAL NOTICE: A Mass of Christian Death and Burial will be held on Tuesday morning, Feb. 2, at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington at 9:30 a.m. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family. At Mrs. McLeod's request there will not be any calling hours.
