BENNINGTON -- Catherine (Grace) Palmateer, 90, a resident of Bennington, died Wednesday evening, July 5, 2006, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington.

Catherine was born in Troy, N.Y., on July 6, 1915, the daughter of Thomas and Josephine (Myers) Cronin. She was educated in Troy schools, was a graduate of Catholic Central High School and graduated from the Chicago Home Nursing School, where she received her licensed practical nursing certificate.

Catherine married Richard F. Palmateer Sr. on Aug. 30, 1934. Mr. Palmateer died Feb. 4, 1981. Catherine was very involved as a 4-H leader and was a member of the civic council. She was the Petersburgh, N.Y., librarian for several years and the Petersburgh tax collector for 16 years. Catherine and Richard were very well known while operating Dick’s Variety in Petersburgh for many years. Catherine enjoyed reading and loved crocheting.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Berlin, N.Y., and when she was able, she attended Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Bennington.

She is survived by her son, Richard F. Palmateer Jr. and his wife, Paula, of Tucson, Ariz.; her daughters, Grace Andrews of Lebanon, Ill., Barbara Wilson of Batesville, Miss., and Joanne Harrington and her husband, Elmer, of Bennington; 14 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her daughter Christine Lapp; her granddaughter Michele Harrington and her great-granddaughter Ashley Bessette.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Monday morning, July 10, 2006, at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. Interment will follow in the family lot in Albany, N.Y., Rural Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be held Sunday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. at Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, 213 West Main St., when the family will be in attendance.
