Cecilia Davis 1915 - 2008 BENNINGTON Cecilia Davis, formerly of Maple Street, died peacefully on Friday, April 25, 2008 at the Vermont Veterans Home. Born in Bennington on May 27, 1915, daughter of George Peter Gratton and Alberta Vachon, she received her early education in Bennington and was a 1933 graduate of St. Joseph Business School and a 1974 graduate of St. Joseph College. She also attended Connecticut University and was a graduate of St. Mary's Hospital School of Practical Nursing in Waterbury, Conn., class of 1965. She remained on staff until her return to Bennington to care for her elderly parents. Mrs. Davis was also employed as a charge nurse at Putnam Memorial Hospital until her retirement, and later returned to work at the Vermont Veterans Home and remained on staff until November 1985. Prior to nursing, she was employed as a secretary and real estate agent. Mrs. Davis was artistic, enjoyed classical music, the theater and often attended the Metropolitan Opera when living in New York and Connecticut. She enjoyed traveling and touring Europe and traveled extensively in the United States and Canada. Cecilia drove throughout her beloved Vermont, visiting historical and quaint, charming towns. She enjoyed her books and the history and culture of all places she visited. Her greatest love was for her family, her home with a patch of green and flowers, and her many friends. Her husband, Milton DeForrest Davis, whom she married Dec. 9, 1938 in Arlington, is deceased. She leaves her son Milton DeForrest Davis, Jr. "Peter" and his wife, Darlene, of Bennington; her step-son William Hurley; her brother, Robert F. Gratton and family of North Bennington, and nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her sisters Rita Zemleduck and Loretta Gratton Shippey; by her brother, Henry Gratton, and by her aunt , Alice Houran Vachon. FUNERAL NOTICE: A memorial Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the family lot in St. John the Baptist Cemetery in North Bennington. There will be no visiting hours.
