Obituary Condolences

MANCHESTER -- C.H. Ford Hutchings, 77, of Hamilton Parish and Manchester, peacefully passed away on Aug. 22, 2005, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington after a long illness.

Beloved husband of Betty (Preston), who he married in 1955, he was a loving father to Preston, George and Lisa (Cueman) and their spouses, Barbara, Sandra and John; and grandfather to William and Alistair. He is also survived by his brother, “Rusty” and sister, Diana Milani.

After his family, his passion was golf. He was an original member of the Mid-Ocean Club in Bermuda where he served as the club’s president for more than 14 years. He also held memberships at the Royal & Ancient in St. Andrews, Scotland, and Ekwanok Country Club in Manchester. In his prime, he represented Bermuda in the World Amateur Championships four separate times.

He won numerous tournaments around the globe including Mid-Ocean’s club championship and the Men’s Invitational, the Bulawayo Open in Zimbabwe as an amateur and the Arkell Trophy at Ekwanok Country Club.

During his business career, he was the Shell Company of Bermuda Limited’s president and general manager for close to 30 years when he retired in 1986. He often referred to the company as his second family. While at the company, he founded the Shell Youth Cricket League and became known as the “Godfather of Cricket” by his longtime friend C.V. “Jim” Woolridge. He also was a long-serving director for the Bank of Bermuda Limited.

He was dearly loved by his family and friends. Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 26, 2005, at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church of Manchester. The Rev. Steven E. Berry will conduct the service. At the request of the family, “colorful” attire is recommended.
