BENNINGTON -- Chad Edward Kelly, 31, a resident of Chapel Road, died unexpectedly Wednesday morning, Aug. 18, 2004, at his parents’ home in Pownal. Chad was born in Bennington on Aug. 17, 1973, he was the son of George Squires and Debra (Hoyt) Kelly. Chad attended local schools, graduating from Mount Anthony Union High School, Class of 1992. While in high school he was a member of the Patriots football team, played the drums in the high school band and was on the varsity wrestling team in the heavyweight class. He continued his studies at the Baron Institute in Enfield, Conn. where he studied diesel mechanics. He had worked as a mechanic for Casella Waste Co. and Ryder Truck in Rutland, he then began working at the former Fairdale Farms Dairy as a truck driver and continued there after the business was sold to Garelick Farms where he was currently employed. He had been a member of the Pownal Center Fire Department since he was 16, he joined Company 3 of the Bennington Rural Fire Department in 2000 where he was a member of the extrication team. He was an avid New York Yankees fan and enjoyed race cars, hunting and fishing, especially participating in the Lake Champlain Father’s Day Fishing Tournament with family. He loved his children and was a devoted father.

He is survived by his wife April (Lewis) Kelly of Bennington whom he married March 22, 1997 in Pownal; their children Benjamin and Abby Kelly at home; his parents George and Margaret Squires of West Halifax and Thomas and Debra Kelly of Pownal; his grandmother Mary Kelly of Cranston, R.I.; his brothers Shane Squires and wife Antoinette of Pownal, George Squires Jr. of West Halifax, Michael Squires of West Halifax, Thomas Kelly of Pownal, Michael Kelly of Bennington and Jeffrey Kelly of Bennington; his sisters Robin Squires of Wilmington, Angel Restino of Hinsdale, N.H., Megan Warner of West Halifax, Dawn Meacham of West Halifax, Sheena Squires of West Halifax, Nataya Squires of West Halifax and Ellen Kelly of Bennington; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his grandparents with whom he was very close, Clyde and Mildred Hoyt and Claude and Adeline Squires.

Funeral services for Chad E. Kelly will be held at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, 213 West Main St., Bennington on Sunday, Aug. 22, at 2 p.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Deborah Estey, pastor of The First United Methodist Church of Bennington. Committal prayers will follow at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Pownal. A reception will follow at the Beech Street Fire House. Friends may call at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. when the family will be present.

In lieu of flowers, gifts in Chad’s memory may be made to his children’s educational fund with checks payable to April Kelly, in care of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, P.O. Box 957, Bennington, VT 05201.

All members of the Bennington Rural Fire Department are asked to meet at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. to pay respects to the family.
