Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- Funeral services for Charles A. Sauer Sr. were held from Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church Saturday, May 10, 2003 with Rev. Vincent Coppola, c.s.c., associate pastor, officiating.

Organist was Donald McMahon and soloist was Monica Murray. Hymns offered during the funeral mass were “Amazing Grace,” “On Eagle’s Wing’s,” “We Walk by Faith” and “Just a Closer Walk with Thee.” The funeral pall that draped Mr. Sauer’s casket during the funeral mass was placed by six of his children, Susan Bushee, Janet Yerke, Stephen, Donald, John and Matthew Sauer.

A wooden cross was then placed on the casket by Susan Bushee. The scriptural readings were offered by Peggy Gagnon, a sister-in-law, and a nephew, Jeffrey Sauer.

The offertory gifts were presented by three grandchildren, Joshua, Eric and Alyssia. Words of remembrance were given by Kevin Goodhue, chief of the Bennington Rural Volunteer Fire Department.

Bearers were George Lewis, James Kenyon, Scott Buck, Dean Yarnall, Wayne Davis and Shawn LaFountain.

A private family prayer service at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home preceded the funeral mass.

Members of the Bennington Rural Volunteer Fire Department formed an honor guard during the funeral service. Mr. Sauer was a charter member of the Rural Fire Department and was serving as department secretary at the time of his death.

Following the funeral mass the casket was transported to Park Lawn Cemetery on a fire department truck. The funeral procession paused at the Willow Road station of the fire department where the fire alarm was sounded in Mr. Sauer’s honor.

Committal prayers were offered by Rev. Vincent Coppola and the American flag was folded and presented to Mr. Sauer’s son, Matthew, by Joseph Krawczyk Sr. and Lew Levin of VFW Post 1332 in Bennington.

Taps were sounded by Harwood “Woody” Strobeck. Mr. Sauer, a resident of Gore Road, Bennington, died May 7, 2003 in Bennington.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home 628 Main Street, Bennington.
