BENNINGTON -- Mr. Charles A. Sauer Sr., 72, a resident of Gore Road, died Wednesday evening, May 7, 2003 at the home of his daughter, Susan Bushee, following a long illness.

Born in Mineola, N.Y., Oct. 19, 1930, he was the son of the late Charles and Dorothy (Welch) Sauer. He received his education in Long Island, N.Y. and the Bennington schools.

Mr. Sauer was a veteran of the Korean Conflict.

He married the former Mary Jane Harrison at St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington on Jan. 2, 1965. Mrs. Sauer died Aug. 16, 1979.

In earlier years Mr. Sauer was employed as a roofer and sheet metal worker for Monument Roofing and Skyway Roofing. At the time of his death he was employed at Vermont Roofing in Bennington. The National Roofing Contractors and the Roofing Industry Alliance recently named Mr. Sauer a 2002 MVP Award recipient for progress. This award was in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the roofing industry over many years.

He served in the Vermont House of Representatives from 1976 to 1978.

Mr. Sauer was a longtime active member of the Bennington Rural Volunteer Fire Department. He was a charter member of the department and at the time of his death was serving as department secretary. He was a devout member of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 307. Mr. Sauer was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars 1332 and the American Legion Post 13.

His favorite pastime was enjoying his grandchildren.

Survivors include seven children and their spouses, Susan and Thomas Bushee, Janet and Paul Yerke, and Stephen Sauer and Sunshine Ruiz, all of Bennington, Matthew Sauer of Pownal, Charles and Tammy Sauer of Gardner, Mass., Donald and Julie Sauer and John Sauer all of Pflugerville, Texas; 12 grandchildren, Josh, Eric, Mariah, Alyssa, Taylor, Darren, Zachary, Tyson, Sigurd, Faith, Alexandra, and Aaron; two brothers, Andrew Sauer and David Sauer both of Bennington; a sister, Patricia Chase of Wolf Point, Mont.; nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins and a very good friend, George Lewis of White Creek, N.Y.

The funeral will be held Saturday, May 10, 2003 at 12:30 p.m. from Sacred Heart St. Francis Church where the liturgy of Christian death and burial will be celebrated.

At Mr. Sauer’s request there will be no calling hours.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery, Bennington.
