CAMBRIDGE, N.Y. -- Charles Avery Wilt, 83, a former resident of Cambridge Woods, died Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2005, at the Vermont Veteran’s Home in Bennington, Vt.

The son of Martha Useted Wilt and Harold R. Wilt, Avery was born in Cambridge on Monday, Nov. 27, 1922. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy as a gunner aboard the USS Quincy during World War II, surviving the invasions of Normandy and Okinawa.

Avery is survived by his brother, D. Stuart Wilt, and joins his predeceased brothers, Andy, Barney and Roy Wilt.

He was the devoted father of Steven C. Wilt of Hoosick Falls, Deborah C. Whitfield of Petersburg, Barry W. Wilt of Cambridge and Lisa G. Wilt of Cambridge; the beloved grandfather of Steven Wilt Jr., Christina Gates, Jennifer Wilt, Heath Whitfield, Evan Whitfield, Britney Johnson, Jessica Wilt and Aidan Vallee; and the great-grandfather of Matthew Wilt.

Charles Wilt was a highly skilled craftsman, working most of his life as a master welder, builder and in all phases of construction. He lived mostly in the Albany area, moving back to Cambridge five years ago.

He loved collecting stamps, antique clocks, fishing and going to auctions. His strength, his undying and loving spirit, humor and caring will live forever in the hearts of all who were blessed with his presence in their life.

Friends and relatives are invited to call on Friday, Dec. 16, 2005, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Ackley & Ross Funeral Home, 73 West Main St., Cambridge.

A service remembering and celebrating Avery’s life will take place at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

A burial with military honors will take place in the spring at Blooming Grove Cemetery, Troy.
