PETERSBURGH, N.Y. -- Charles Butler Bentley, 77, lifelong resident of Petersburgh died on Thursday evening at the Bennington Health and Rehabilitation.

Born in Troy, N.Y., on Aug. 6, 1930, Charlie was the son of the late Charles L. and Clara Butler Bentley. He was the loving husband of the former Patricia E. Meagher whom he married in Cherry Plain, N.Y., on New Year’s Eve of 1955.

Charlie graduated from Hoosick Falls High School and attended the Methodist church as a child. He enlisted in the United States Army and served during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge, he worked at Sperry Warehouse in Troy. For many years, he was the owner/operator of Bentley Sand & Gravel in Petersburgh. He served the town of Petersburgh as Republican chairman for over 40 years and as town councilman for two different terms. He was also vice-president of the Veterans Memorial Hall of Petersburgh.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Patricia E. Bentley; his children Charles B. “CB” Bentley Jr. of Petersburgh, Colleen A. (Clay) Bartlett of Dorset, Vt.; two grandchildren Elise Bartlett of Dorset, Vt., and Blair Bartlett of Saratoga; a sister Gladys Viall and a niece Darlene Suto both of Cropseyville; along with a great-nephew Drew Suto and his daughter Elizabeth of Troy.

Private graveside services will be held at the Pleasant Valley-Meadowlawn Cemetery of Hewitt Road. There will be no public calling hours.
