BENNINGTON -- Mr. Charles C. Tidd, 79, a resident of Gore Road, died Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003 at his residence following a brief illness.

Born in Alstead, N.H. July 31, 1924 he was the son of the late Charles W. and Gladys (Page) Tidd. He received his education in the Bennington schools and was a 1942 graduate of the former Bennington High School. A World War II veteran, Mr. Tidd enlisted in the U.S. Army on the same day as his brother Larry, and following the war they returned to the United States on the same day.

Mr. Tidd married the former Elizabeth L. “Betty” Parks at the First United Methodist Church in Bennington on Nov. 16, 1961. Mrs. Tidd died March 16, 1995.

Mr. Tidd was employed as a machinist and tool dye maker at Bijur Lubricating Company in Bennington for more than 44 years until his retirement in 1987. He had also been employed at the former Walkers Market.

Mr. Tidd was a former member of Stark Hose Company, Bennington Fire Department. He was a former member of the Moose Club, American Legion and VFW. He was proud to be a blood donor and over the years donated 206 pints of blood.

Following retirement he was a driver for the Green Mountain Chapter, American Red Cross transportation van in Vermont, New York, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

Mr. Tidd will be remembered by many as a practical joker. He enjoyed golf, traveling, going to airshows, woodworking and jig-saw puzzles.

Survivors include a son, John C. Tidd of Bradenton, Fla.; four daughters, Jeanne M. Denette of Pownal, Barbara A. Leonard of Bennington, Dianne E. Marchinkowski of Pownal and Corrine C. Tidd of Bradenton; nine grandchildren, John C. Tidd Jr. of Torrington, Conn., Mark, Gary, Richard and Darci Leonard and Kelly Shoff, all of Bennington; Frederic Shoff of Pownal, Benjamin Grikstas of Gainesville, Fla. and Addie Grikstas, a student at the University of Florida in Gainesville; nine great grandchildren; his companion Jane Green of Bennington; a sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Arthur Catotti of Gainesville; several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews and cousins. Mr. Tidd was predeceased by a set of twins, Larry Tidd and Anne Kiersznowski.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Monday, Aug. 25, 2003 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Michael J. Morneault, pastoral care coordinator of Bennington Area Home Health, officiating.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Sunday from 4 to 7 p. m. when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will take place in the family lot in White Chapel Cemetery.
