Charles E. Holden 1919-2008 BENNINGTON - Charles E. "Chuck" Holden, 88, a resident of Spring Street, Bennington, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008 at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington following a long illness. Born in Detroit, Michigan Oct. 6, 1919, he was the son of Edgar L. and Mary Doyle Holden. He received his education in the Rutland schools and was a 1938 graduate of Rutland High School. A veteran of World War II, Chuck served in the Marine Corps from Aug. 19, 1943 until March 4, 1946. He married the former Mary Hoyt at St. John the Baptist Church in North Bennington on Oct. 15, 1949. For thirty years Chuck was employed at Union Carbide Corporation, now Energizer Battery, in Bennington until his retirement in 1982. At the time of his retirement Chuck was employed in the employee relations department. He was a devout member of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church. A life member and past Grand Knight of Council 307, Knights of Columbus, he was also a member of the Fourth Degree Assembly at the K of C and served as both District Deputy and Historian at the state level of the Fourth Degree. Chuck was a member of American Legion Post 13 in Bennington and the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati. He enjoyed bowling with friends from Union Carbide, working bingo with his friends at the K of C, collecting first day stamp covers and matchbooks and all types of sports, especially softball, baseball and basketball. Besides his wife, of Bennington, he leaves a daughter and son--in-law, Linda and Keith Vandale of North Bennington; a son and daughter-in-law, Edgar and Joanne Holden, of Shaftsbury; two grandchildren, Katie Vandale and Nicholas Holden; nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a sister, Ruth Vachon. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME, Friday, Feb. 15, 2008 at 9:30 a.m. with a prayer and from Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church at 10 a.m. where the Mass of Resurrection will be offered. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery. Should friends desire contributions in Charles Holden's memory may be made to either the Bell Tower Fund at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church, the Bennington Rescue Squad or the Activities Fund at the Vermont Veterans Home. All members of Council 307, K of C, are asked to meet at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. for the recitation of the Rosary.]]>
