Charles F. "Charlie" Harwood

Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- Charles F. “Charlie” Harwood, 85, a lifelong resident of Bennington died peacefully on Thursday, March 11, 2004 at Crescent Manor Care Centers.

Mr. Harwood was born in Bennington on June 25, 1918 and was raised in the Bennington area. He was the son of Charles Lyman and Alta Harwood Church.

For many years Charlie worked for the Bennington School District, first as a bus driver and later as a truant officer. He enjoyed his work and took great interest in the well-being of the children in his charge. He often knew many generations of the same family.

To his family, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, he was an adventurer. We looked forward with great anticipation for his invitation to go along on one of his many excursions to explore the country roads of Vermont or to visit relatives and old acquaintances or to make new friends. He was known by all for his ability to tell a good story and for his capacity for friendship.

Mr. Harwood was the husband of the late Opal (Docherty) Lindsey Harwood who died in 1994.

Charlie is survived by his eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, Michelle and Jim Kehoe and their sons Travis and Ryan of South Burlington; Erica and Shane Becker and their son Brandon of Shaftsbury; Cheryl Langlois and her daughter Olivia of Winooski; Todd and Kelli Langlois and their sons Casey and Nathan of Fairfax, Brian and Lynda Langlois of Gilbert, Ariz., and their children Danielle and Quinlan, Laurie Levesque of Woodford, Nelson Battis of New York and Jeanine Battis of New Hampshire.

He is also survived by his two sons-in-law, Don Langlois of Shaftsbury and Ronnie Battis of Bennington, as well as a nephew, Herbie Holland, who was a good friend and companion. In addition, he leaves aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and many, many friends. He is predeceased by his two daughters, Nancy Langlois and Patricia Battis, both of Bennington.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours.

Committal services will be held at the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery at a time to be announced.

Contributions in Charlie’s memory may be made to a charity of your choice through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201. Those who would like to share memories or bits of family lore are invited to contact his granddaughters, Michelle Kehoe at michelle. [email protected] or Erica Becker at [email protected] .
