STUART, Fla. -- Mr. Charles G. Harte, 79, a well known former resident of Bennington, Vt., died Sunday evening in Stuart, Florida.

He was born in Baltimore, Md., son of the late John B. and Alice McDermott Harte. Mr. Harte attended LaSalle Military Academy, graduated from Bennington High School and Saint Michaels College in Winooski, Vt. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II.

Mr. Harte married the former Margaret Dougherty of Hoosick Falls, N.Y., in 1952. His devotion to her, his family and his Catholic faith was always his priority. He was an avid runner and a licensed pilot.

In earlier years he owned movie theatres in Bennington and later established an insurance and real estate agency which he operated with his wife. They sold their business in 1981 and moved to Florida but still remain one of Bennington’s largest commercial property owners.

Survivors include his wife Margaret “Sis” Harte of Sewall’s Point; six children, Mickey, Gregory, Debbie and Michael Harte of Florida, Robert Harte of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Charissa Comar and her husband Glenn of Bennington; four grandchildren, Jamie, Cailin, Wendy Kathleen and Matthew Comar; two sisters, Marie Jerome of Bennington and Denise Whittle Durham of Danville, Va.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, Judge Bernard Harte, and a sister, Barbara Hurley.

Private funeral services will take place at St. Joseph’s Church.
