Charles William Gould III

1928 - 2014 BENNINGTON Mr. Charles William Gould III, 86, a longtime resident of Crescent Blvd., died Wednesday, Nov. 12, at the Crescent Manor Care Center in Bennington following a long illness. Charlie was born in Adams, Mass. on Apr. 6, 1928. He was the son of the late Charles William Gould II and Leone (Viault) Gould. At the age of four Charlie's father passed away and his family moved to Arlington, Vt. He received his education in Arlington and was a 1946 graduate of Arlington High School. Following high school Charlie joined the United States Army and served during the Korean War. On Apr. 23, 1955, he married the former Eleanor Borig in Philadelphia, Pa. Charlie became a certified watchmaker and joined his stepfather, Clifford Atkins, in the family business, Atkins Jewelers, in Bennington, later known as Atkins and Gould Jewelers from which he retired in 1990. Over the years Charlie and Eleanor enjoyed traveling to Europe and to the diamond capital of the world Antwerp, Belgium. For several years Charlie and Eleanor spent the winter months in Palm Springs, Calif. Charlie enjoyed travelling, designing jewelry and was very dedicated to his business. Charlie served as President of the Vermont/New Hampshire Jewelers Association. He was a member of the Bennington Rotary Club and was one of the founding members of the Catamount Rotary Club in Bennington where he also served as President. He was a member of the Bennington Chamber of Commerce where he served on the Board of Directors; he also served on the board of BROC, the Vermont Retail Association and the Bennington Down Street Association. In 1980 Charlie was recognized in "Who's Who of the Jewelry Industry." Survivors include his beloved wife, Eleanor; his devoted daughters, Susan Koniares of Boxford, Mass., and Anne Delaney and her husband, Michael, of North Andover, Mass.; and his grandchildren, Katherine Koniares of Washington D.C. and Michael Koniares of Boston, Mass. He was pre-deceased by his twin brother, Walter Clement Gould; and his son-in-law, John W. Koniares. FUNERAL NOTICE: Friends may call at the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME on Monday Nov. 17, from 4 - 6 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Tuesday Nov. 18, at 10:30 a.m. with a prayer service and then from Sacred Heart-Saint Francis de Sales Church at 11 a.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered. The burial with military honors will take place in Park Lawn Cemetery. If friends desire contributions in memory of Charles W.
