Charlie was born in Andover on January 16, 1923 to Joseph and Christine Forbes Lamson. The doctor was called to the family farm for the delivery, but was unable to arrive until three days later due to heavy snow, which left the roads impassible. He attended the Peaseville School, a one room schoolhouse, and Chester High School, graduating in 1941. When not in school, he was generally seen hunting, fishing or trapping. Charlie was a World War II veteran. He enlisted in January 1942 at the age of 19. He served as a paratrooper and was stationed in several locations including the Pacific, New Guinea, and the Philippines. When he returned home, he worked at the Staissni dairy farm and at the family farm in Andover. In 1956, he married the love of his life: Gertrude Pohjonen Orchitt. He established his own family dairy farm, purchasing the Tupula farm on East Hill Road, where he lived for the rest of his life. Along with milking cows, cutting wood and sugaring, Charlie drove school bus and was the Andover Town Constable. For many decades, Charlie also served as tax collector and sexton for the town of Andover. Charlie was a lifelong member of American Legion Post 67 of Chester, the Elks of Springfield, and the Grange. Charlie was predeceased by his wife Gertrude in 1993, son Robert in 1974, daughter Rachel Gentile in 2009, and son-in-law Michael Gentile in 2011. He is survived by his siblings: brother John Lamson of Lebanon, N.H.; sister Marion Copenhaver of Hanover, N.H.; and sister Dorothy Baker of St. Albans, Vt. He is also survived by his children: daughter Margaret Grout & son-in-law Alden of Arlington, Vt.; daughter Bernice Smith of Andover, Vt.; son John Orchitt & daughter-in-law Mina of Anchorage, Alaska; son Bruce Orchitt & daughter-in-law Karen; of Chester, Vt.; son Daniel Lamson & daughter-in-law Erin of Chester, Vt.; son Joseph Lamson & daughter-in-law Nina of Windham, Vt.; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in Charlie's name be made to the Chester-Andover Family Center.
